Sun Stones is a series of three illuminated sculptures commissioned for the entrance plaza of Midland Library in Portland, Oregon.
Inspired by Oregon’s state gemstone, the works translate the sunstone’s crystalline structure and shifting colors into stacked geometric forms. Their warm powder-coated surfaces reference the mineral’s copper inclusions, which create its distinctive reddish-gold shimmer.
During the day, the sculptures provide vibrant landmarks for the library; at night, internal illumination passes through their intricate patterns, extending the works into the surrounding plaza through light and shadow. The commission came through the Regional Arts and Culture Council under the Multnomah County Percent for Art Program, which sets aside two percent of the construction budget on county-funded building projects. The commission came through the Regional Arts and Culture Council under the Multnomah County Percent for Art Program, which sets aside two percent of the construction budget on county-funded building projects.
