Burning Man 2015 Proposal for the Carnival of Mirrors
The definition of Infinity, Describing the Universe
It is quite difficult to actually define what the Universe means.
The area of the Universe is infinite. Infinity is a hard concept to grasp; the Guide gives us this definition:
Bigger than the biggest thing ever and then some. Much bigger than that in fact, really amazingly immense, a totally stunning size, real 'wow, that's big', time. Infinity is just so big that by comparison, bigness itself looks really titchy. Gigantic multiplied by colossal multiplied by staggeringly huge is the sort of concept we're trying to get across here.
If the universe is so big, that means there must be a lot of stuff in there, right?
Is there art?
No, None. Because the function of art is to hold a mirror up to nature there can be no art because the Universe is infinite which means there simply isn't a mirror big enough.
BUT WHAT IF WE CREATE A FIELD OF INFINITE MIRRORS? REFLECTING EACH OTHER AT AN INFINITE COMBINATION OF ANGLES?
COULD WE BRING ART INTO THE UNIVERSE FOR THE FIRST TIME?
Maybe...we can try...
WHAT WILL THE INFINITY FIELD CONTAIN?
BUT MORE SPECIFICALLY, IT WILL BE 4-8 CRYSTALLINE STRUCTURES MADE OF 2 WAY MIRROR PANELS. REFLECTIVE FROM THE OUTSIDE. FACETED SHAPES SHIMMERING LIGHT
Daytime, each structure will be a reflective mirage... glimmering in the distance but not appearing to be separate from its surroundings.
AT NIGHT, EACH SHAPE WILL LIGHT UP FROM THE INSIDE, CAUSING THE 2 WAY MIRROR TO GO FROM REFLECTIVE TO LIGHT EMITTING
THE LIGHTING WILL BE CONTROLLED INTERACTIVELY. WE ARE THINKING OF CUSTOM MADE XYLOPHONE WITH KEYS THAT CORRESPOND TO THE COLORS LIGHTING UP EACH CRYSTAL STRUCTURE THAT CAN BE PLAYED BY ORDINARY HUMANS
